Summer 1

Year 6

Summer Term

April 2019 – May 2019

Hello and welcome back after the Easter break. I hope you have all had a fabulous time! This term we will be learning about West Yorkshire. This is a great opportunity for your children to learn more about the county they live in.

The children will be taught by myself and Mrs Holmes. They will also enjoy art lessons with Miss Stevens.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to ring me or see me at the end of the school day.

Newsletter Summer 1

This half term the children will be going on an adventure to discover West Yorkshire. The children will learn about geographical features that are found in this county. They will also have the opportunity to make and taste their very own Yorkshire puddings. During the term we will be hosting a British Bake Off competition with a focus on Yorkshire puddings- so look out for your invite! The children will also study famous artists from West Yorkshire.

We will have a separate Learning Adventure for writing. Our adventure will be based on the book Clockwork.

In writing the children will:

  • Write a setting description based on the setting of the book- Glockenheim.
  • Create a figure for a cuckoo clock and write a persuasive advert to sell the figure to a clock maker.
  • Write character descriptions for the main characters in the story.
  • Plan and write their own endings to the story.
  • Write a newspaper article about the birth of a Prince.
  • Write diary entries in the role of various characters at different points in the story.

Mr Robins came into our class one afternoon and introduced us to a really strange song that we originally thought was a bit rubbish. After going through the words and having a go, we started to enjoy it a bit more and understood what the song was about. Ilkley will never be the same again!

We also sang a new version of a famous pop song from Leeds rock group The Kaiser Chiefs. Mr Robins told us where they got their name from and showed us a new version. If you listen closely, you may recognise some famous landmarks from the area that you may have visited.

Mental Health

During SATs week, we have been learning all about our mental health and how to look after ourselves. Everyone loved trying out yoga and we enjoyed discussing how to make sure we have a growth mindset, rather than a fixed mindset.

GBBO: Yorkshire Puddings!

We have loved learning all about West Yorkshire! As part of our learning, we learnt how to make Yorkshire puddings. We then invited parents into school and we created a Great British Bake Off inspired Yorkshire pudding piece. They were delicious!
