Spring 1: Magical Monsters

Magical Monsters

We hope you had a lovely Christmas and we are excited to begin our new learning adventure, Magical Monsters.

This half term we have lots of exciting and fun activities planned, we will also be going on a school trip!

We will be listening many lovely stories about different magical monsters. We will be writing descriptions about the different monsters and designing our own magical monsters. We will think about the habitats of the different monsters and the different things they need to survive.

We went on a Gruffalo hunt through the deep, dark woods of Clapgate school and found lots of different characters from the story.

We created our own story map to help us write a recount of the story of the Gruffalo. We used lots of adjectives to create a descriptive piece of writing.

We have learnt about compound words and we know that these are words which are made when two other words are used together. We worked in small groups to put different jigsaw pieces together to make compound words. We have been noticing compound words in some of the books we have been reading.

We listened to the story of ‘The Gruffalo’ and made a list of the different features that are mentioned in the story. We thought about why the Gruffalo has these different features and wrote our own character descriptions using different conjunctions.

We felt sorry for the animals in the wood because the Gruffalo was scaring them all and we decided to make a WANTED poster to try and catch him. We thought about the different features of a WANTED posters and tried hard to include these in our posters. We wrote our first WANTED poster and then tried hard to edit and improve our work.

Writing Buddies

We met with our writing buddies from 4LB. We shared all the amazing writing we have been doing and looked at the writing they are doing in Y4. It was lovely to meet the children from Year 4 and share our work.

We had a mysterious visitor to our classroom today!! We found a margarine carton but we didn’t know where it had come from. When we looked inside, there was a small blue creature. We wrote some questions to find out more about this magical monster.

In maths we have been continuing with our lessons on length. We know that objects can be measured in cm or m depending on how long or tall they are. We have learnt how to measure a curved line using string and a ruler and have used our mathematical knowledge to work out the answers to worded problems.

We went on our school trip to RHS Harlow Carr, it was brilliant! We took part in an outdoor workshop session where we collected natural resources and made sculptures of different minibeasts. Then we walked through the gardens looking out for the different sculptures and we spent some time in the adventure playground.

In Art, we will be looking at sculpture. We will create our own sculptures using tinfoil and will use digital art to photograph them. We will also think about how different emotions can be shown using sculpture.

In DT, we will be designing and making our own magical monster hand puppets.

In science, we will be learning about ‘Living Things and their Habitats.’ We will learn that different animals live in different habitats depending on their needs.
