Autumn Term 2 A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away

Welcome back everyone to our 2nd half term of the year. We hope you have been able to look at some of the things we we up to during our Autumn Term1 'Groovy Greeks' topic.

This term, we are strapping ourselves in, making sure we have our space suits on and heading off to planets far, far away. With a heavy leaning to Star Wars, we are going to be writing some setting and character descriptions, along with designing our own planets and inhabitants who live on them. We shall also be designing our own vehicles to explore different planets and writing letters to aliens, explaining what life is like for us on Earth and asking them to tell us about their home.

We will also be discussing whether some of the famous characters from the Star Wars universe are good or bad, explaining our reasons why and also researching the actual planets in our own solar system.

We hope you enjoy what we will be up to on this page and hope the force will stay strong with you during this half term.

Creative Curriculum Day

During our creative day, we spent the morning making these large images of characters from the Star Wars universe. Mr Robins helped us with the templates but we painted them in groups all on our own and had to find the characters in books to make sure we coloured them correctly. It was also a good time for some of us who haven't seen any of the films or read any of the books to discuss who they were.

We also began to make a famous spaceship from the Star Wars universe 'The Millennium Falcon out of paper plates. When we have finished them, we will add some images on here.

The Planet Jakku

We watched a video clip of a spacecraft flying across the planet Jakku. We watched closely to see what we could spot during the video. We then looked at some images of the same planet and began to label them with adjectives. We tried to include 2 adjectives so these will help us write some brilliant descriptive sentences that include expanded noun phrases.

Character Descriptions

We looked at some of the key characters from the Star Wars universe and researched them in books, online and by watching short video clips about them. We decided on Darth Vader and Yoda. We made notes and from those, created sentences that tried to include really descriptive adjectives. Below is an example of a mind map of Yoda and a description that someone created in the style of a Top Trump playing card.

The Space Shuttle

We began to move away from the Star Wars universe and brought it back to real life by looking at the Space Shuttle. Following some Imagineering where we imagined ourselves lifting off in the shuttle orbiter and feeling the forcer of that, we found out facts using an interactive website. In pairs we were only allowed to make simple notes and then shared our findings with another pair.

Finally we were asked to write an information report on the shuttle, using word mats to help tat had key technical words associated with the shuttle.

The Man on the Moon

Mr Robins introduced us to a new book called The Man on the Moon. We read the story together and what Bob got up to on a normal day, completing his jobs on the moon. We then had to sequence key images from the book and write simple sentences that included correct punctuation and also tried to include some expanded noun phrases and time openers.

Below is an example of the images that we had to sort and an example of a piece of work taken from one of our books.

Bob's Space Suit

After reading the book and writing our own sentences about what happened, we looked a bit closer at the suit Bob would need to wear whilst on the moon. After making a list of the things needed, we thought about the order of getting ready correctly (it's very important to get dressed in the right order). Unfortunately we didn't have a real space suit but we had great fun getting dressed in clothes that belonged to Mr Robins. Below are some images of the Imagineering we did to help us write a detailed sequence of steps for any budding astronauts.

Wow Reading Lesson

Each week Mr Robins is going to read us an extract from a text. This term we have started to listen to Macbeth. Mr Robins read the opening and displayed the bit where the three witches are introduced. We discussed what we thought about them and what we think they may have looked like. After some discussion, we were given some clay and asked to create one of the three witches. As you can see, we came up with some really horrible looking hags but we were really able to think about the characters and it was lovely to get our hands dirty whilst talking about the book.
