Autumn Term 1 Groovy Greeks

Our learning journey for this half term is the Groovy Greeks. Our writing tasks will include writing diary entries as a Greek hero or heroine, creating wanted posters for a Greek creature, Greek myth story writing, holiday leaflets to Greece and much more.


We had a super first day back in school and spent time together painting large Greek Gods and Goddesses, creating our own Greek vase designs, writing our names using the Greek alphabet and making our own Greek headdresses.

Greek Vases and Names

The children looked at examples of Greek Vases and different pottery designs then had a go at designing their own, using a range of materials, including oil pastels, coloured pencils, felt tips and chalk. You can also see some of our names written using the Greek alphabet. Some of us didn't have letters in Greek times so we used the letters we used today but it was interesting learning how the alphabet has changed.

Greek Headdresses

We made our own Greek Headdresses and loved it when Mr Robins allowed us to go outside and spray paint them either gold or green. Above are just a couple of examples.

Greek Heroes and Heroines

We read the story of Hercules and the twelve tasks he had to complete. We then discussed what qualities a hero or heroine needs. We discussed real life heroes from today like firemen, policemen and vets. We labelled images of a Greek hero with expanded noun phrases, choosing two adjectives and then put these into sentences. Below are some examples of our writing. 

Greek Mythological Creatures

After reading the story of Hercules, we thought about some of the creatures he had to defeat and labelled then with pairs of adjectives. We then used these in our sentences to write a description of them.

Writing Expanded Noun Phrases

We looked at an image of Medusa and looked all the things we could see - the nouns.

Once we had decided what we were going to describe we then thought of two adjectives to describe each feature. We learnt that when we use two adjectives we must split them with a comma - making an expanded noun phrase.

Talking Partners

There are times in class where we work in pairs. We like to do this as much as possible as we like to learn from each other and work with our friends. Below are some images from us discussing what we would have seen, heard, smelt and felt if we visited and walked around Ancient Corinth.

This followed us watching a video recreation of what it would have looked like.

We had to describe the city using expanded noun phrases.
