Welcome back! We are so excited to start our new learning adventure: Pottermania. This half term, we will be learning all about 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' by J.K. Rowling. Year 6 have already enjoyed a day at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where they made wands, learnt how to make potions and even played a simple game of quidditch. We will also be lucky enough to work with Alive and Kicking this half term who will help us write imaginative stories.
As always, please feel free to catch me before or after school if you have any questions or concerns.
At the start of the week, 6LJ were visited by Martin (from Alive and Kicking) who wowed all of us with his entertaining stories. He then explained how most scary stories follow a similar structure and gave multiple examples of this. Using the children's experiences, he helped each child to create their very own boggart (an evil or mischievous spirit), its environment (a dangerous place) and a deep desire or want of the boggart; the outcomes were fantastic!
The following day, in class, the children planned their stories considering who their two child characters would be, an adult that would be looking after them and warn them not to go to the dangerous place, the setting description of the dangerous place, the encounter with the boggart, a twist and the ending.
After this, we enjoyed an editing day where the whole class worked extremely hard. Martin explained how important it is to focus on the ending so it is believable and exciting and the children edited and improved their endings. In the afternoon, parents joined us to help edit and improve our stories. It was fantastic for the parents to be part of the learning process and the children loved sharing their ideas.
Now, we just need to continue the editing process before our stories will be complete. Keep checking our webpage as, when they are completed, we will publish them on the website.
We've just got back from a fabulous and fun trip to London where we enjoyed walking around the city and seeing lots of famous sites (including Anthony Russell from X Factor). We were lucky enough to watch Aladdin in the West End on Wednesday evening and look around Harry Potter World on Thursday.
