Deep in the rainforest...

 

This half term we will be learning about The Amazon Rainforest. This is a really exciting topic where we will get to do lots of creative and exciting lessons. On our first day of the half term we transformed the classroom into a rainforest by making our own leaves, plants and snakes.

In our writing lessons we will be reading Journey to the River Sea. All of our writing will be linked to the events that occur in this book. Sometimes we will imagine that we are the characters from the book and write from their perspective. In other lessons we may pretend to be news reporters to report about events from the book. We will also spend some time studying the different characters and writing character descriptions. 

As part of our Learning Adventure the children will:

  • Explore the layers that make up a Rainforest.
  • Make and evaluate a traditional Brazilian recipe.  
  • Locate Brazil on a map and locate geographical features of Brazil.
  • Recreate rainforest paintings in a similar style to famous rainforest artists.
  • Rehearse and perform their very own carnival dance routine.
  • Design and make musical instruments for a carnival.
  • Design and make headdresses for a carnival.
  • Design, make and evaluate their own smoothie.

 

In Writing the children will:

  • Write a postcard about their journey to Brazil.
  • Write a set of instructions based on making a smoothie.
  • Describe a rainforest.
  • Create shape poetry based on a Brazilian Carnival.
  • Design and make holiday leaflets about Brazil.
  • Write a non-chronological report about a rainforest animal.
  • Write an invitation to their very own Carnival.

 

In Maths the children will:

  • Read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1,000,000 and determine the value of each digit.
  • Read Roman numerals to 1,000 (M)
  • Add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including using formal written methods (columnar addition and subtraction).
  • Add and subtract numbers mentally with increasingly large numbers.
  • Identify factors and multiples.
  • Identify prime numbers.
  • Multiply and divide numbers using written and mental calculation strategies.
  • Compare, order and add and subtract fractions.

 

 

 

Science  

In Science we have been learning about the human body. So far we have explored how the cardiovascular system works by pretending we were the blood flowing through the body. We went to various parts of the body and then when we ran out of oxygen we went back to the heart to be pumped to the lungs to become oxygenated. Once we became oxygenated we went back to the heart to be pumped around the body again. 

 

We also learnt about the different parts of the heart. We did some research about the human heart and then used our knowledge to create an edible diagram. This lesson was both interesting and delicious! 

PSHE

In PSHE, we have been learning about Puberty and gender stereotyping as part of our SRE topic. We have discussed the different things that happen to the human body when we grow from a child into an adult. We have studied the human life cycle and understand the different stages of the human life. We really enjoyed our lesson when we looked at the stereotypes attached to gender and how we can challenge them.

We went on a team building trip to Yeadon Tarn which we thoroughly enjoyed. We got the chance to take part in a variety of problem solving activities, climbing and canoeing. We had so much fun canoeing and swimming around in the tarn. 

Computing

In computing we are working hard to create our own games that we have very carefully planned. Once we have completed making our games we are going to test them before saving them into a public folder for our class to try out our games.

In R.E. we have been learning about the 5 Pillars of Islam which are followed by Muslims. So far we have looked at 2 pillars in detail - Allah and Zakah. Allah is the name given to god. We found out that Muslims pray to god 5 times a day. We discussed our thoughts on this and the difficulties we think people may have when trying pray this time times a day. We also found out that Muslims are very thoughtful and they are expected to give money to charity to support those in need. We also thought about our own commitments within our lives.
