We have had a fantastic start to the new school year in 6LJ. This week, we have started learning about the ancient Mayan civilisation by becoming archaeologists and investigating items from the Mayans. We will be learning all about this non-European ancient society throughout the Autumn term.
This year, 6LJ will have a very busy timetable. Every morning we will study Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling, Reading, Writing, and Maths. In the afternoons, we will learn a range of subjects through our Learning Adventure topic on the Mayans.
Monday afternoon: Computing and R.E.
Tuesday afternoon: Learning Adventure (Mayans)
Wednesday afternoon: P.E (please bring both indoor and outdoor kit) and Art
Thursday afternoon: Science and PSHE
Friday: Reading and Music
We are starting this half term studying the story 'Clockwork' by Philip Pullman. We will complete lots of different activities related to this including writing character descriptions, diary entries and predicting what will happen at certain points in the story.
This half term we will be focusing on our place value knowledge. We will be reading and writing numbers up to 10,000,000, ordering and comparing numbers, rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 and solving addition, subtraction and multiplication calculations using the column method. We will also use all of these skills to solve a variety of written problems and challenges.
Please make sure these are brought to class on Thursdays so that I can read with the children and they can make great progress in this area. We will also give the children the chance to change their reading book on Friday.
Each Thursday the children will receive spellings, times tables and maths homework related to our learning in class. The homework will be explained to the children and they will have an opportunity to ask any questions, however if you are unsure, I will be available any day after school to go through any questions.
As part of our topic, the children should create a Mayan temple at home. They can do this in any way they like. For example, paper mache, a drawing, junk modelling, clay etc. We will then collect all the temples and create a Maya city in class.
