Autumn 2

Welcome back!

After a brilliant start to the year, we are looking forward to starting a new topic and letting the creative juices flow. This half term our focus is the UK so we will be looking at farmland compared to cities. To support us in our understanding we will be studying the book 'The Sheep-Pig' which was written by Dick King Smith and was the storyline for the film 'Babe'.

First week back

What a fantastic first week back! We started our week by turning it classroom into a farm. We drew animals, used pastels to create farm houses and created our own cover for the book. We finished by having a competition for the best animal in show and we guessed the weight of the animals.

We started the book and listened to Babe's life as a piglet. We thought about how he must have felt and used this to write a diary as Babe. We also thought about what Babe's new home on the farm was like and wrote a setting description.

We were visited by Farmer Ramsbottom who has availability for a new sheepdog. We were trained by Sergeant Major Sheepdog Barker who told us that we should always be quiet, be sneaky and listen carefully to instructions.

We also started to design or farm vehicles which we will be creating in our design and technology lessons. We will be using a motor which we will use our science knowledge to create.

We had a worrying discovery this morning. We found a crime scene! We think a sheep may have been injured. We have collected the evidence, interviewed a witness and written a newspaper report to help the police find the culprit!

Today, we entered the sheep dog competition. We needed to safely guide the sheep to it's pen. However, the organiser were not very organised and some wolves got in! We couldn't leave the sheep with the wolves but we also needed to get the wolf in to it's own pen. It was hard work but we managed it. Afterwards, we wrote a letter of complaint aswe were extremely angry at the terrible organisation!

Throughout our topic, the children have been completing artwork based on David Hockney. I'm sure you agree that the final products are stunning.
Thank you to 2DP for visiting us to share some amazing work!  4CJ really enjoyed seeing and sharing our work. We can't wait to see you next half term!
As part of our last week learning about the UK, we looked at our local area. We couldn't think of anyone better than those who live here to help us so we invited in parents and carers. We started by matching photos of places in the area. Then each group chose one area and how we would spend money to improve it. Thank you for all your support!
