We have had a fantastic start to the new school year in 6LJ. This week, we have started learning about the ancient Mayan civilisation by becoming archaeologists and investigating items from the Mayans. We will be learning all about this non-European ancient society throughout the Autumn term.
We are starting this half term studying the story 'Clockwork' by Philip Pullman. We will complete lots of different activities related to this including writing character descriptions, diary entries and predicting what will happen at certain points in the story.
This half term we will be focusing on our place value knowledge. We will be reading and writing numbers up to 10,000,000, ordering and comparing numbers, rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 and solving addition, subtraction and multiplication calculations using the column method. We will also use all of these skills to solve a variety of written problems and challenges.
This half term we learnt all about the Mayan civilisation. First, we became archaeologists and studied some artefacts, finding out how they were linked with the Mayans. Following this, we created timelines to show the history of these people. We also learnt about subsistence farming (the Mayans lived off their land), Mayan masks and Mayan food. We made traditional Mayan hot chocolate with chilli and tasted it.
At the end of Autumn 1, we held a Mayan Museum event which was fantastic. The children loved showing their work to all the parents and carers that came so thank you for attending! We look forward to seeing you at our next event in Autumn 2.
